A NIGHTINGALE, sitting aloft upon an oak and singing according to his wont, was seen by a Hawk who, being in need of food, swooped down and seized him. The Nightingale, about to lose his life, earnestly begged the Hawk to let him go, saying that he was not big enough to satisfy the hunger of a Hawk who, if he wanted food, ought to pursue the larger birds. The Hawk, interrupting him, said: "I should indeed have lost my senses if I should let go food ready in my hand, for the sake of pursuing birds which are not yet even within sight."

A DOG lay in a manger, and by his growling and snapping prevented the oxen from eating the hay which had been placed for them. "What a selfish Dog!" said one of them to his companions; "he cannot eat the hay himself, and yet refuses to allow those to eat who can.""Well, I won't. I just wanted you to know me as I am. That time you told me of your darling hope for the spring was the worst of all, Anne. I shall never forgive myself for the way I behaved then. I repented it with tears. And I DID put many a tender and loving thought of you into the little dress I made. But I might have known that anything I made could only be a shroud in the end."

As I'm sure you're aware, it was heavily rumoured over the last couple of weeks that Nintendo was going to hold a Direct earlier this morning. Evidently, this rumour didn't prove true and Nintendo had a little fun of its own riling up its fans during the wait.
pic.twitter.com/BkhTYDNnpY— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) January 10, 2018 These are my favourite sorts of stories to report on. Yes, I know it's disappointing that there's no Direct news yet, but the internet's reaction is what kept me stuck to my screen last night.

Around about 4:30 PM (GMT) yesterday evening, a few images went around Twitter showing off a hastily deleted Tweet from Gamestop, a couple of secret videos, and my personal favourite: an empty space on the Direct listing that was totally NOT due to an odd number.

This period of wildness went on for about two hours as Nintendo Direct trended, Tweets were tweeted, and a lot of media outlets and sources got involved in having fun with the hype, including IGN, GameSpot, Sonic, Doom, Mega Man, Assassin's Creed, Nibel, us here at Pocket Gamer, and much more.

If the sinking, settling feeling of realisation wasn't the best thing about this whole play, it was watching the internet's reaction once Nintendo America released the picture above.

Between memes, anger, frustration, hilarity, respect, and the general 'AWWW YOU' siege of GIFs, I think it's safe to say that Nintendo trolled us hard and we're not even mad about it.

Of course, if you'd like to see what Nintendo's got in store for us in its latest Mini Direct, check it out right here.
Pierced not his grace, but were all graced by him.
