Nintendo released the NES Classic and SNES Classic in 2016 and 2017 consecutively, so a Nintendo 64 Classic should be just around the corner. Alas, it’s not to be. Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America, announced that a Nintendo 64 Classic is not in the works.

In an interview with Kotaku, Fils-Aime explained that developing a Nintendo 64 Classic at the moment just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, business-wise:

“We were clear when we did the first two Classic series that, for us, these were limited time opportunities that were a way for us as a business to bridge from the conclusion of Wii U as a hardware system to the launch of Nintendo Switch. That was the very strategic reason we launched the NES Classic system.”

Nintendo sees the Classic line of consoles as a limited-time project, rather than an annual release. Instead, Nintendo hopes fans will use Nintendo Switch Online for all of their retro gaming needs.

Still, when pressed on whether a Nintendo 64 Classic would ever be released, Fils-Aime said, “I would not ever rule something out,but what I can tell you is certainly that’s not in our planning horizon.”

So while a Nintendo 64 Classic isn’t totally off the table, it doesn’t look like it will be making an appearance anytime soon. Nintendo fans will have to seek their N64 fix elsewhere.
&#;

Updated 21st October, 10:29 AM: It's an exciting day for Plug in Digital as SwapTales: Leon! has finally launched on iOS.
Grab the game on the App Store here for £3.99/$4.99 and make some crazy stories.

If there's one thing severely lacking on the mobile app market at the moment, it's a good selection of child-friendly (and interactive) storybooks. SwapTales: Leon! by Witty Wings is a game we never knew we needed, and it's currently in beta.

Leon is a mischievous little so-and-so who sneaks out (with your help) and has a wild, night-time adventure. The target age group is six years-old and up, but having played the game before with another 20-something year-old colleague, I can tell you now it's actually quite challenging. You can't just pawn it off on your kids to sort out themselves, they'll need a little help...and secretly, you'll likely love it.

The factor that makes this game unique is its madlib design, letting you swap certain words in the sentence to alter the course of the story and change the pictures. With 30 endings, one 'true' ending, and hundreds of pages of hand-painted art there's plenty to work through in this unique gamebook.

SwapTales: Leon! is slated to release on October 20th and will be a premium title. Until then, if you've got an iPad feel free to check out their forum page or sign up to their closed beta.

Popular battle royale Garena Free Fire has announced that its first big event of 2021 will be called The New Beginning, appropriately enough. It will see players battling across the Bermuda Remastered map with various in-game rewards up for grabs.

The event will be sticking around until January 17th, taking place on a revamped version of the original Bermuda Map. It's made up of five different areas, which are called Aden's Creek, Academy, Nurek Dam, Peak and Samurai's Garden. The original Bermuda map will still be available too in addition to the remastered version.

Previous winners of our Big Indie Pitch events have involved colourful cartoon kitchens, lush fantasy worlds, and futuristic race tracks.

The winning game at the Very Big Indie Pitch at Pocket Gamer Connects 2015 in London features white writing on a black screen.

It's called Progress, and it comes from Card City Nights and Ittle Dew developer Ludosity. Here's how it works: on each page, a vague command is written on a black page. Figure out how to follow it, and you'll fill the screen with white and move on to the next screen.

Some are easy. 'Two fingers'? Hold two fingers on the screen. 'Detour'? Draw a squiggly line like you're tracing the footsteps of a tipsy hiker. 'Ten'? Tap with ten fingers. 'Eleven'? Well, now you're going to have to get creative.

Some ask you to gallop like a horse or sing into the microphone. I don't want to spoil any more challenges but suffice to say that it's constantly surprising you with barmy sentences that your brain somehow manages to convert into movements and touches.

It's the sort of brilliant party piece, where you just want to show it to someone who hasn't played it before, and watch the cogs turn in their head, and see their eyes light up when they try out their silly solutions

It's an ingenious game, and it should be out real soon.

Second place went to Tindrops: a colourful and minimalist reaction game about tapping and sliding on a whack-a-mole grid of circles. There's something vaguely Elite Beat Agents-esque about it, which is never a bad thing.

It comes from Dutch duo Markus Heukelom and Jos Blom, and is currently free on the App Store until February 1st so hey, go grab it.
Third place
And finally, the third place prize was handed to a game called Magic Flute by Mozart. I imagine the 18th century composer had little input on the actual development of this one. Can't imagine Wolfgang is too familiar with Unity.

It's inspired by the game-like stage design of an upcoming rendition of Mozart's The Magic Flute, as choreographed by Amon Miyamoto. Now, you can follow the events of the opera in the form a puzzle game.

You'll be sliding around blocks in a Monument Valley-style, isometric world, trying to solve puzzles (while also avoiding evil snakes). The music's obviously by Mozart, but there's a throaty narrator, too, relaying the story.

We'll have a video of this game soon, so you can see exactly what it looks like.
'"Lo, all these trophies of affections hot,

A FISHERMAN who lived on the produce of his nets, one day caught a single small Fish as the result of his day's labor. The Fish, panting convulsively, thus entreated for his life: "O Sir, what good can I be to you, and how little am I worth? I am not yet come to my full size. Pray spare my life, and put me back into the sea. I shall soon become a large fish fit for the tables of the rich, and then you can catch me again, and make a handsome profit of me." The Fisherman replied, "I should indeed be a very simple fellow if, for the chance of a greater uncertain profit, I were to forego my present certain gain."

 &#;
Amir Rajan has released "brutally difficult" strategy game The Ensign onto iOS.

The Ensign is a prequel to the fantastic incremental discovery game A Dark Room. It's actually an expanded version of The Dusty Path in that game.

"I wanted to make a strategy game that had high replay value, as opposed to a game about discovery," Rajan says in the game's description.

He also advises that you play A Dark Room before even attempting The Ensign. But it's up to you.

I'm not going to spoil any of The Ensign for you here because, as with A Dark Room, it's best you jump into it yourself.

Be warned, though, Rajan has a message for you: "Best of luck to whoever attempts this game. I imagine few will succeed in completing all of it."

That's a challenge if I've ever heard one. You can purchase The Ensign on the App Store for 69p / 99c right now.
Pocket Tactics

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, CD Projekt Red's card battler, is finally available for Android devices following a brief beta test earlier this month. If you took part in the beta, your progress should carry over to the full release.

If you know nought about Gwent, it actually started out as a fun diversion in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It grew so popular, even getting physical decks bundles with the game's DLC, that not one but two games spawned from it: Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales and a more fleshed-out version of the basic mini-game in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.

I played a silly amount of Gwent both physically and in The Witcher 3. The version I enjoyed back then is vastly different and more straightforward than the iOS and Android release, which takes the core mechanics of the mini-game and expands upon them greatly.
GWENT is live on Android! Download now on @GooglePlay! ???? pic.twitter.com/bQl7MrRiE4— GWENT (@PlayGwent) March 24, 2020The original Gwent was good fun, but it didn't exactly have legs, especially considering the fact that you could spam the exact same tactics every round and inevitably win. Spies out first, give your opponent the first round, mess around in round 2 until they pass, then throw down your high-point siege cards and bring out the commander's horns.

If that made absolutely no sense to you, I'd strongly advise checking out The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in any of its many forms. It's even out for Nintendo Switch, so you've almost no excuse not so.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game launched for iOS last year, meaning Android players have had to wait a fair while to take it for a spin. You'll find it available for download now as a free-to-play title from both the App Store and Google Play.
Searching for some quality multiplayer games? Here are 25 of the best for iPhone and iPadUpdated 13th January, 12:52 PM: Though there's no word on the worldwide launch, Lit the Torch has soft-launched in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand if you'd like to check it out on your local App Stores.
If you're not from one of the select countries, check out how to create a foreign iTunes account with our handy guide right here.

There are loads of great mobile games getting teased at the moment, and Lit the Torch is definitely one of them.

You guys'll know by now that there are a few things I can't resist: Pinball, beautiful game design, and puzzlers, and oh boy do I get shivers with this one. If you ignore the slight woodenness of the character's movements, Lit the Torch is simple stunning, from its use of contrasting colour to its use of light and dark to make elements more vibrant.

There's very little information surrounding the title at the moment, but its most interesting mechanic is definitely that 'other sight' window you can use. This window brings up another world that you can interact with, creating new platforms and solutions if you find yourself a bit stuck - a bit like a parallel universe.

You can follow the game's Twitter to keep up with any new information, but the game is only advertised as 'coming soon' to iOS. Whether that's 'this month' soon or 'Q1' soon, remains to be seen.
